Engine tuning can not be approached with a ‘one-size-fits-all’ mentality which is why we will tune an engine based on its intended purpose. Our tuning philosophy aims to ensure reliability while extracting the optimum engine performance from each individual package.

We attempt to replicate the factory driveability as far as possible, including cold-start, idle speed control, light throttle cruise, economy and transient response. We aim to replicate or improve on the factory performance in all these areas, and this will usually take longer than the full-throttle tuning. It is these areas that will make a car enjoyable to own and drive, and these same areas will quickly drive you crazy if they aren’t right.

While the hunt for peak power leads a lot of tuners to concentrate on full-throttle tuning, we believe in full three dimensional tuning where every combination of load and rpm is optimised individually. This ensures that the completed tune will provide perfect driveability and performance at any throttle position. We also ensure that a safety margin is provided in all our tuning work – We would prefer to sacrifice 10 kw and have an engine that will provide long service life, than produce a time bomb!

There are a mindboggling number of aftermarket ECU options available to the performance enthusiast, and chances are we have tuned most of them. We have made the decision to focus our attention on a number of specific brands of ECU which we know intimately. These brands allow us to provide ECU solutions that fit our customer’s requirements in terms of cost and features, with products that we know inside and out. While we specialise in the above brands, we are happy to tune just about any brand of ECU you may have fitted to your car.

The tuning industry is unusual as there are no formal qualifications required to become an ‘approved’ tuner. This has lead to the industry becoming littered with a number of back-yard or internet tuners who are out to make a quick dollar. With no requirement for formal qualifications, it can be a minefield selecting a trustworthy tuning shop.

At STM we believe that knowledge is power, and company founder and tuner Andre Simon possesses a variety of qualifications that both prove our capabilities, and give you the piece of mind that you are dealing with true industry professionals. These qualifications are listed to the right.

The right equipment is critical to getting the best results. We use an advanced Dynapack 4WD hub dyno to provide total control of the vehicle. The vehicle is directly coupled to the dyno, meaning there is no chance of wheel spin and there is no inertia to mask the results, giving incredible sensitivity, repeatability and less time spent tuning. Our Dynapack is housed in a specially sound proofed dyno cell complete with full exhaust extraction to provide the best tuning environment possible.

Our tuning skills are also available to international customers. We are happy to travel to your location to provide on-site tuning solutions. This also includes the ability for us to provide trackside support and data analysis where required.

While it is preferable to have access to a quality engine or chassis dyno, where this is not available we can optimise a tune on the road or racetrack.
